BETTS WINS HIS THIRD OF THE MASS SEASON SATURDAY AT BRIDGEPORT

(July 25, 2026):  Troy Betts of Middletown, DE took top honors Saturday night at the Bridgeport Speedway, picking up his third win of 2026 in the 25 lap feature for the DCB Plumbing & Heating Mid-Atlantic Sprint Series presented by Capitol Renegade. Betts won his All-State Auto Glass heat race to sweep the evening and pad his season point lead. It marked the third time he has visited victory lane this year, and the 10th time in 11 races that he has finished in the top five.     

“It feels good to get back to victory lane after the mini-slump we have had recently”  remarked Betts in victory lane, “The competition in this series is second to none. I would put our drivers up against any 305 sprints in the country right now!”   

Betts drew the pole in the redraw and used his front row starting spot to charge into the lead at the drop of green chased by Rick Lafferty, who was coming off two straight runner-up finishes. Fourth starter Dave Brown grabbed third after a pair of slider attempts and immediately began reeling in Lafferty looking for second. Betts quickly opened up a comfortable lead as Brown reeled in Lafferty and began challenging for second by lap 5. Brown slid in front of Lafferty in turn four only to see the veteran return the favor on the other end of the speedway. This would become the theme of the next 6 laps as the duo would trade the spot back and fourth, each using all the grooves on the race track. 

As the race reached the halfway point, Lafferty had taken control of second, as the leader Betts was just getting to lapped traffic. Meanwhile, quite a battle had just begun for the fourth position, as 11th starter Tim Iulg had caught a very fast Shelby Kelly.  Kelly had broken away from the rest of the pack and was running down the top three as Iulg was slicing thru traffic, and now neither was giving an inch as they both tried to catch the leaders. This battle would rage for the entire second half of the race, with Kelly charging back past Iulg every time he thought he had taken the spot.  Betts saw Lafferty get within striking distance in lapped traffic with five laps remaining, however he was flawless negotiating the back markers as he charged to his 7th career Series victory. The final three laps saw Dave Brown pull out all the stops as he once again caught Lafferty and stole the second position, stopping Lafferty’s bid for his third straight runner-up finish. The Kelly/Iulg tussle was not decided until the final turn, when Iulg slid under Shelby to claim fourth, with Kelly settling for fifth as she posted her first top five of the year.           

Rounding out the top ten were former series champ Eddie Wagner, 2-time winner Adam Carberry, the night’s Fast-timer Robbie Stillwaggon, Tyler Grau and Aiden Borden. 

MASS will be back in action this Friday, July 31st at the Georgetown (DE) Speedway where the Series will take part in the Camp Barnes benefit race for the first time. The 25 lap A-Main will pay $1500 to win and $300 to start. Group time trials with a random invert will be used to determine the feature starting lineup. Pit gate opens at 3pm, Grandstands at 4pm, Hot Laps are at 6:15pm, with racing starting at 7:15pm.
