SLICK RICK STRIKES AGAIN; LAFFERTY GOES WIRE-TO-WIRE FOR THIRD MASS WIN

(Sept. 19, 2026):  Rick Lafferty of Pennington, NJ made a triumphant return on Saturday night to the Delaware International Speedway by capturing his third MASS series victory of the season. Lafferty used his outside pole starting position to his advantage as he led wire to wire in the Betts Garage Towing & Hauling 25 lap feature for the DCB Plumbing & Heating Mid-Atlantic Sprint Series presented by Capitol Renegade. It was Lafferty’s first start at the southern Delaware speedway in almost 25 years.   

“I think the last time I competed here was back in 2002,” stated Lafferty in victory lane, “That second try at the initial start, I had to get back to my “410” roots because of how tough the competition is with this group.”   

Eddie Wagner and Lafferty brought the field to the start of the A-Main with Wagner taking command with the second row of Troy Betts and Dave Brown both charging past Lafferty in turn one for second and third.  Before a lap could be scored, Adam Carberry appeared to get over Lafferty’s RR wheel in turn four and launched into a series of flips bringing out a red flag to stop action. Carberry quickly exited uninjured, however the car suffered extensive damage ending his night.  On the complete restart, Lafferty was up on the wheel and got a much better start charging out in front of Wagner quickly for the early lead. Point leader Betts took third and quickly reeled in Wagner, and began applying early pressure for the runner-up position. 

Betts wasted no time grabbing second as Tim Iulg was challenging Ryan Stillwaggon to move into the top five.  Iulg grabbed fifth while Lafferty continued to pull away from the rest of the field.  Betts seemed to be the only driver that could keep pace with the leader, as he would close in on him in lapped traffic, but Lafferty was flawless negotiating the slower cars and never let Betts get close enough to challenge.  The battle over the final 10 laps was Dave Brown pressuring Wagner for third numerous times. With no cautions to slow the action after that first red, Lafferty went on to win by a full straightaway over Troy Betts to post his third MASS win this season. Betts was the runner-up for the second time this year in as many tries at DIS. Wagner was able to hold on to take third, while Brown and Iulg rounded out the top five.              

Next weekend the Mid-Atlantic Sprint Series will be in action on Friday & Saturday nights, Sept.25 & 26, in the annual Danny Serrano Memorial Weekend at the Bridgeport Speedway in Swedesboro, NJ. This will be the final 2 events for the MASS championship point chase to crown the 2026 series champion. Friday the Pit gate opens at 3:30pm, Grandstands at 5pm, with hot laps beginning at 6pm. Day #2, on Saturday, the Pit gates will open at 2pm, with the Grandstands at 3:30pm, and warmups at 5pm.
